Blog is
like a website but has smaller amount of data and usually not more than one
person has authority to change the contents. Blog is more likely as a personal
website where people sharing everything that’s on their mind online. The idea
is same with Facebook and Twitter, Blog is also the place where you can meet a
lot of people with the same hobby with you, share your idea, and share your
experience with them. This is also why Facebook
and Twitter has known as Micro-Blog
because the idea is the same with Blog but
Facebook and Twitter also known as Social Network is the small type of that
where the amount of characters in your articles or in the Social Network known
as status is limited for not more than 400 characters on Facebook and 200
characters on twitter. Put it simple so,
Blog is in the middle between website and Social Network. Blog is actually more
like a website, because you have your own domain name, unlike Social Network
where you have to go to their domain first to use it. For example, you have to
go to facebook.com to use Facebook and twitter.com to use Twitter. Blog also
has the same benefit that website has, Blog also can make money based on the
number of viewers you have in the certain amount of time and based on the
product that you advertised on your Blog. This is the mayor different between Blog
and Social Network unlike in Blog in the Social Network, what you are doing is just
working without paying, I mean upload your photos, share your opinion, and invite
friends are just working without paying to make the Social Network that you use
more bigger, famous, and gain more money.
It
has been seven years since the first time I started to learn how to use a Blog
and started to write anything in my mind online. Now, I have five active
website under my name where I still update it gradually. I have three advertisements
website, one personal Blog, where I write about my opinion and one Sharing
Blog, where I share something that I like to my Blog viewer. There is a reason
why a Blogger, someone who gradually writing on the Blog, has to have more than
one website. It’s because very view website that successes if the website has
no certain topic or more than one topic in one page. People usually follow a Blog
if the Blog share something they like. If the blog has two main topics, the
follower might get disturbed because they will get an e-mail every time the
Blogger posted something new, so they will make sure every article has to be
worth to read. For example it is very unlikely for us to see a website posted
about funny quote and drinking advertisement at the same time or a website about
personal experience and movie review in the one page. This fact proves that
it’s highly unlikely to see a Blog or website become famous because of they
have two main topics in the same page.
The fact
that the Blog have two main topics is unlikely to be famous give me an idea to do
this assignment where I have to extend my comfort zone. In this case my comfort
zone is the fact that I have been doing this thing for seven years and play it by
the rules to gain more subscriber and viewer. In this assignment the idea is, I
will post something that out off my main topic to my Blog and see the change
number of people that view my Blog pages. I took one of my Blog where I usually
posted about my opinion and my essay about something that recently going on in
the world, but now I will post two articles about my personal feeling and experienced
about something in my life.
The first
article that I’ve posted in my Blog is ‘’The Things That Prevent Me to Write’’
(see the link bellow). It’s just briefly explanation about something that stops
me to write in my Blog page. The second article is “Writing a Blog is Better
than What You're Doing Now” (see the link bellow). For the second one I make my
title look like an opinion but actually the content is about my personal experience
and my personal life just to see if the title is also matters. After I posted the articles to my Blog page
what I usually do is to promote them. I usually use three ways to promote my articles.
The first is I usually go to the online community, it’s more like a Micro-Blog
where you can find a lot of people sharing their idea and make briefly
information about my article in here, so my subscribers know that I have posted
new articles. The second is I usually go to post it on Facebook, so my friends,
family and my colleague who interested in my articles will click on it. The
last thing is to ask my partners to share it to their Blog page so their
subscriber may look and click in my articles also I usually do the same to
their articles.
The result
of this experiment about extending my comfort zone is as I expected before and
even worse than I thought. My pages viewers drop 74 percents and this is the
first time I get this number of viewers since I make this Blog eight months ago.
I usually count my page viewer per week because it’s easier to check whether my
articles are good or not because I gradually post the same amount of articles
each week. The purpose of this method is to make sure that the change amount of
my viewers is because the quality changes not the quantity change of my
articles, also this method make me easier to know what kind of article that my
subscribers like. For this experiment I also posted two articles this week to
make sure that the change number of viewer is because the quality of the
articles. My viewer drops 74 percents because of the quality of the articles,
for this week I only got 1375 views on my Blog when usually I got more than
5000 views per week on my Blog. The first article is even worst it gets not
more than 500 views because I write the article that really show that the
content is about my personal experience. The second article is better than
first one; it has more than 900 views because I make the title more like
opinion than my personal experience.
The
conclusion is even a little topic change of existed Blog can make your page
viewer drop drastically and if it’s going for a long time it may reduce the
number of subscribers. Beside the change of the topic, I assumed that the
choice of the topic also contributed to the reduced of my page viewers this
week. I choose to change my topic into the topic that really unlikely to have
many viewer unless you are a public figure. The topic about your experience and
personal life is the topic that no one care, unless you are Brad Pitt or Thomas
A Edison because I assume that people think that why do I have to read
something about him?, I even don’t him and I even don’t know what he did, what
he does and what he has achieved, better to write something about well-known
person that we can learn about his life because he must be has achieved
something that makes him famous.
The extreme
reduced of my page viewer make me decided to send all my subscribers an apology
and explain them everything, moreover I have got several disappointment message
and question about what I wrote this week. Extending the comfort zone may cost you to
lose something that makes you as you are right now, because the idea is actually
to change your habit and behavior. I’m sure that extending the comfort zone not
always end up with a fail. I like to extend my comfort zone, I like new places,
I like new people and I like new habit, because it makes me not to do the same
boring thing every day. This experiment will be the first and the last time I change
my topic of my Blog, also maybe I have to wait little bit more to write the post
about my personal experience. In the future I will just avoid writing about my
personal experience or changing my existed topic before it happened, because if
it has happened I will have to make another apologize to my subscribers. I have
to massage them one by one and if they give me a feedback, I have to give them
a reply or another message to say thank you. I have 1132 subscribers now and it
took me several hours to make an apology to them one by one, so I hope it never
happen again in the future.
